PRP for Other Joint & Tendon Conditions

Struggling with chronic elbow, wrist, ankle, tendon pain, or another musculoskeletal injury? Advanced ultrasound-guided PRP therapy (with or without A2M*) provides natural pain relief and accelerates healing in joints, tendons, and soft tissues throughout the body. Whether you're dealing with tendinopathy, ligament strains, chronic joint inflammation, or a stubborn sports injury, PRP promotes tissue repair and reduces inflammation to help you regain mobility and comfort. With minimal downtime and long-lasting results, regenerative medicine offers a powerful alternative to traditional steroid injections or invasive surgeries.

How PRP Works:

  1. Blood Draw: A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, similar to a routine lab test. (At SD PRP Clinic, we draw between 30 to 120 mL of blood depending on the treatment area, with 60 mL being standard for most protocols).
  2. Centrifugation: Your blood is placed into a specialized processing system and centrifuge, which spins rapidly to separate its biological components. This isolates and concentrates the healing platelets. (At SD PRP Clinic, we exclusively utilize the gold-standard, FDA-cleared EmCyte SP kits).
  3. Targeted Injection: The superphysiologic platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected under advanced real-time ultrasound guidance directly into the site of injury or pain, ensuring precise delivery to damaged tendons, ligaments, or joint spaces.

Potential Benefits:

  1. Targeted Pain Reduction: PRP has been clinically shown to reduce chronic pain and inflammation in stubborn tendon injuries and arthritic joints, offering an appealing alternative for patients struggling with persistent discomfort.
  2. Accelerated Tissue Healing: The concentrated growth factors found in platelets stimulate cellular proliferation, collagen synthesis, and neovascularization to help repair damaged soft tissues throughout the body.
  3. Restored Mobility & Function: Many patients experience significant improvements in joint function, grip strength, and range of motion following therapy, leading to a better quality of life and a reduced reliance on long-term medications or surgery.

Conditions PRP-A2M Might Help:

  • Osteoarthritis: Particularly in the early or mid-stages, PRP with A2M may help reduce pain and slow down the progression of cartilage degeneration. PRP is not advised in servers osteoarthritis warranted a joint replacement surgery (can be tried if surgery is not possible).
  • Tendinitis/Tendinosis: PRP is used to treat tendon injuries. For example in the knee when there is a patellar tendinitis, or in elbow for tennis elbow
  • Ligament Injuries/Partial tendon tear: Studies suggest PRP can help heal knee ligament injuries and heal partial tendon Teras (the evidence is still mixed).

Other MSK Conditions treated in SD PRP with Ultrasound-Guided PRP/A2M:

  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Effective treatment for chronic tendon degeneration at the outer elbow.
  • Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Targeted healing for forearm flexor tendonosis.
  • Achilles Tendonitis & Tendinopathy: Promotes repair for chronic micro-tears and inflammatory degeneration in the Achilles tendon.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: Relief for stubborn, chronic heel pain unresponsive to conventional stretching or orthotics.
  • Ligament Sprains & Partial Tears: Supports healing for stability structures such as the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in the elbow or minor joint instability.
  • Muscle Strains & Sports Injuries: Accelerated recovery for major muscle-belly tears, hamstring strains, and calf pulls.
  • AC Joint Pain & Arthritis: Targeted regenerative care for acromioclavicular joint degeneration.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Wrist Pain: Supportive soft-tissue management for nerve compression and wrist discomfort.
  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: Precision injections to support jaw joint stabilization and comfort.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: We DO NOT inject into disc in this time.  We Do Not perform Epidural injections.
  • Not listed above? : Please text us at 619-784-1314 if your condition is not listed above and want to know if we are doing PRP for that area/Conditon.

Double-Spin PRP + A2M (The Complete Joint Protocol)

For majority of musculoskeletal conditions and osteoarthritis, SD PRP Clinic introduces Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M) into the healing matrix of double spin PRP.

The Analogy: While PRP is the "construction crew" that rebuilds tissue, A2M is the "security guard" that protects the joint.

The Science: In a damaged or arthritic joint, destructive enzymes (catabolic proteases) constantly chew away at cartilage. A2M is a massive, naturally occurring plasma protein captured during our specialized filtration processing. It acts as a molecular trap, capturing and neutralizing these destructive enzymes.

The Process: This protocol involves a similar but more sophisticated process than double-spin PRP. We utilize a specialized concentrator filter to eliminate excess water, unwanted low-molecular-weight proteins, and residual red blood cells, isolating a highly concentrated dose of pure A2M. By combining Double-Spin PRP with A2M, we jumpstart tissue repair while actively shutting down the chemical processes causing joint degeneration.

Is It Effective?

The effectiveness of PRP can vary depending on many factors. Studies show positive results in reducing pain and improving function. The evidence is still growing, and outcomes can be inconsistent depending on several contributing factors (i.e post procedure resting/activity, the severity of the problem, the patient's overall health, and the technique used).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments will I need?

While some patients experience significant relief after a single session, complex or long-standing chronic tendonopathies and arthritic conditions may require a series of 2 to 3 injections spaced several weeks apart.

Is PRP covered by health insurance?

No. Currently, regenerative medicine procedures like PRP and A2M are considered elective and are not covered by commercial insurance plans or Medicare. We provide transparent pricing during your initial consultation. You may use your HSA for these therapies.

What is the recovery timeline?

Because PRP relies on your body’s natural inflammatory and healing cascade, initial post-procedure soreness is normal for a few days. True structural tissue remodeling and functional improvements typically develop gradually over 4 to 12 weeks.
